I prefer to use only granny smiths. Plus I make my pie crust from scratch ("Half a stick of butter in the crust alone!")

I don't line the pre-baking of the filling either, I like to let the filling cook inside the crust, this keeps the crust nice and crispy, but with a tasty moistness inside.
