I should have put a link to this site long ago. DetroitBlog is a wonderful site, one I go to again and again. At first it was a nostalgia thing, but now I think I'd read it anyway because the guy does such a great job of research which, in turn, becomes great storytelling.
I did some urban spelunking in Detroit the last few years before moving to SF. Like so many others, I was inspired by the Demolished By Neglect photography exhibit at the 1515 Broadway gallery. I loved the GAR, but never got in. Really, I didn't try because Ken told me that that Amir and Vince were working the financing up to turn it into a club. Figured I'd get in there once they started work. 16 years later and still nothing's been done.
So, this guy actually got in and it turns into one damned funny story, told really well. For those of you with insomnia, just start reading the archives and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. The Del Rey story and photos are a great place to start.
Go in Peace
I just happened upon your blog while googling "Demolished By Neglect" a project that I conceived and organized some 20 years ago in Detroit. That was all before the age of the internet and digital cameras, so little is really online about that project, but I keep meaning to get something together.
But it's cool to see your blog and reference to it.
Peace,
